The short answer#
Yes, in a narrow sense. Licensed shops in Bangkok can sell cannabis, but only under Ministry of Public Health rules. That is very different from a market where anyone can buy flower over the counter, and very different from the rules some travellers remember from a few years ago.
So the honest answer is that cannabis is available, regulated and controlled. It is not a free-for-all, and it is not something you can order to your hotel from a website or a chat group. If someone offers delivery with no questions asked, they are outside the rules, whatever they promise.
What changed in 2025#
Thailand has changed its cannabis rules several times since 2022. Home growing was loosened first, and then the rules around sale and medical use were tightened. In June 2025 the Ministry of Public Health signed a notification on controlled herbs that sets the current framework.
The core rule for sale is a prescription from a licensed practitioner, for the amount the prescription states, typically up to 30 days' supply. Online sales are not allowed under the same notification, and advertising is restricted. If you read guides from 2022 or 2023, treat them as out of date.
What is still not allowed#
Several things remain outside the rules. Selling or buying cannabis online, or through social media with delivery, is not allowed. Sharing your product with friends, even friends who are visiting too, is not allowed either. Taking cannabis out of the country is a serious offence in almost every case.
Smoking has its own rules. Public smoking is restricted in Thailand, and many hotels, malls, condominiums and bars ban it outright. A licence to sell is not a licence to smoke anywhere you like. We cover the etiquette in a separate guide.
What it means for a visitor#
For most visitors the practical route is simple. Talk to a licensed practitioner about whether a prescription suits you. If they agree, take it to a licensed shop, buy only what the prescription covers, and keep your receipt and prescription together.
Requirements can differ between clinics and shops, so ask both what documents they need. Bring your passport, and bring any medical records you have, because they help the practitioner make a sound decision.
Check before you go#
Rules change quickly, and this guide is general information, not legal advice. Check the current Ministry notice on the day you travel. Ask the shop to confirm that its licence and procedure match the current rules.
If something feels wrong, leave. Message us on LINE or WhatsApp with your question. We will tell you what we can and cannot help with, and we will never ask you to order online.
Where to get help if a shop is unclear#
If you are unsure whether a shop is licensed, stop before you buy. A licensed shop will ask about your reason for purchase, check the prescription or consultation, and give you a receipt. A place that skips those steps, sells over a counter with no paperwork, or promises that the rules do not apply to tourists is not a safe place to spend your money.
Your hotel front desk and the Ministry of Public Health's published notices are reasonable places to check current rules. Rules change, so treat anything you read in an old travel forum as a starting point to verify, not a final answer.
Common questions visitors ask#
Can I smoke in the hotel room? Usually not. Hotels set their own rules, and public smoking of cannabis is restricted across Thailand. Ask the front desk before you bring anything into the building, and assume the answer is no unless they tell you otherwise in writing.
Can I take products home? The answer depends on what you buy, how much, and what is allowed when you leave the country. Keep the receipt, keep products sealed and check current rules before you travel, because those answers are not the same as the rules for buying inside Thailand.
Can I buy for friends? Do not. A prescription or consultation is for the person it is written for, and buying on someone else's behalf is one of the quickest ways to get into trouble. Each visitor should arrange their own.
