What terpenes are#
Terpenes are aromatic compounds made by many plants, including cannabis, herbs and citrus fruit. They are the reason lavender smells of lavender and lemon peel smells of lemon. Cannabis makes dozens of them, and each strain has its own mix.
The terpenes you will see most#
Myrcene is earthy and musky, and is often linked with mango. Limonene smells of citrus. Linalool is floral, like lavender. Pinene smells of pine and fresh air. Caryophyllene is peppery and spicy, and it is the one that lab studies report binding to a receptor in the body, the CB2 receptor.
What terpenes may do#
Some lab and animal studies suggest terpenes have effects of their own. The idea that they change how a cannabis product feels is widely repeated, but the evidence in people is still early. Treat terpenes first as a guide to flavour and aroma, and only second as a possible influence on effect.
How to read a menu#
A terpene list shows which aromas are strongest in a product. Match them to what you like: citrus and pine for a bright, fresh product, earthy and musky for something heavier. If a product lists no terpenes, ask the shop for its lab report.
